Dutch-American Friendship Treaty

The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) offers US citizens the possibility to start a business in the Netherlands or to represent American companies with business interests in the Netherlands.

The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty offers a simplified application procedure compared to entrepreneurs from other countries. An important difference is that the review of the business (plan) by the Ministry of Economic Affairs is not required.

Important elements in the application process for a residence permit based on the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty are:

  • Investment of a substantial amount of capital in the business
  • Actual trade between the US and the Netherlands
  • The business must be real and active
